Over the weekend I got a message from Beat listener Kelsee who wanted to talk about an organization that is important to her, so I’ve turned over my blog to her today …
Hi, I am Kelsee and I am 10 years old. I really like music because I’ve grown up with it and I like to write music. It’s my life. I’m in Grade 5 and I love to help out.
I used to live in Anselma House with my Mom and it was pretty tough. I used to be vegetarian and everyone else ate meat so it was hard. The shelter was scary sometimes but fun to be around other kids and the people that worked there. Some of the moms made really good food. I missed having my own room but I understood why we were there; because we had to leave our house and didn’t have a home anymore. The staff at Anselma House helped us find a new home and gave us everything we needed to support us.
That was over a year ago. I like my home that I live in now but I feel bad for the people that don’t have a home. I wrote a letter to Santa Claus and I told him how it’s been a really rough year for me and my Mom. I had a broken foot. I had oral surgery. I’ve been sick. I have a bad shoulder and have to do physiotherapy. I have swollen lungs and it’s tough for my body to heal because I’m young …
I showed my Mom the letter and she asked me “What is your Christmas wish?” I told her that I want to help other people at the shelter we used to live in. So she helped me start a drive and it feels good.
We are collecting bathroom things like toilet paper, deoderant, and toothpaste. We have lots of clothes, jackets, and boots. I really like the stuffed animals, especially the little red devil one. Big companies are helping me and it makes me feel happy and surprised.
Tim Hortons gave me a big mug and a huge thing of coffee. My school King Edward has helped with over 20 bags of clothing, toiletries and toys. WonderFIT brought me 12 bags of clothing and stuff. Lead Kings donated so much too! They even got 100 rolls of toilet paper. And they gave us a $100 dollar gift card and $150 cash. People I don’t even know from Owen Sound have made a big donation.
I heard people talking about me on the radio and people on Facebook know who I am. I feel famous!
My friends and family are also really helping out too. And even other people we don’t know! A really nice lady named Jenny and her husband have paid for a U-Haul so we can get everything to the shelter. Those cost a lot of money and it’s very generous of them to pay for it.
Megan, my next door neighbour and her husband Brad help us look through things we have been collecting and even let us keep some of the donations in their home because ours is so full!
I think living at Anselma House was really hard for my Mom but she always tried to smile for me. She would take me to the piano room every single day so we could play music and write together. She has worked really hard to give us a good home. She has painted my bedroom purple and has my favourite autographs on my wall above my bed. She likes to do fundraisers to help people so I like that she has been helping me do my own. You can make a donation here or by dropping items off to Anselma House. If you do please let them know it is on behalf of Kelsee’s Christmas Wish.
Even though it has been a tough year, doing this drive makes me feel REALLY happy. I hope everybody at the shelter gets to have a really good Christmas and anyone reading this takes a second to think about them. My Mom always tells me that she thinks everyone is a Superhero …
I think she’s right. I am also a Superhero and you are too.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
