A sign-off, if you don’t know, is a catchy tagline a broadcaster will use at the end of their broadcast. It’s meant to wrap up the the presenter’s broadcast in a way that provides the audience with consistency, comfort and often well-wishes for the day. A strong sign-off is a must-have for every great broadcast journalist – and even the ones that aren’t so great. That’s where I come in.
Ever since I started at the Beat (eight years ago, BTW) I’ve been in search for a good sign-off to use at the end of my newscasts. I hadn’t found one until about a month ago. That’s when we received this message from a young fan on the Beat Box (519-772-4686).
When I heard how that young man wrapped up his phone call, I knew I’d found my official sign-off.
Since then, ‘Good luck, guys, and good morning’ has been the way I’ve wrapped up my final News Beat at the end each Beat Breakfast and I will continue to do so from this point on.
I don’t know the boy’s name, but I am so thankful for his sign-off inspiration!
