My dad left my mom, my siblings and me when I was 10. He moved across the country and we didn’t see or hear from him for years. He said terrible things about my mom when he left and I lost all respect for him. In my late teens I had some contact with him – mostly over email, and mostly hostile. He was unapologetic about what he did and said about my mom and was very critical of me for supporting her. We never resolved our issues and eventually stopped communicating with one another. I’m now married and I have a new baby girl. Last month, my dad contacted me sounding very enthusiastic about meeting his granddaughter saying he looked forward to ‘being a grandpa’. Am I obligated to allow him back into my life and into hers? – JQ
