Hockey fan or not, you knew the name Gordie Howe, a.k.a. Mr. Hockey.
This one hits home. A few years ago when I was working in the sports autograph & memorabilia business I got to work with Gordie. I’ve never seen a man his age sign so many autographs. He never turned them down though. He was always grateful for the recognition & anyone who met or knew him knew he had a wonderful sense of humour. One of his sons who was with him the day I collected signature after signature for customers needed to continuously be reminding Gordie how and where to sign jersey after jersey because of his dementia. There came a point where I couldn’t tolerate watching him sign, his hand shaking fiercely. I had to leave the room with tears running down my face. I thought to myself, this man shouldn’t be here, he should be on a beach somewhere enjoying retirement away from the spotlight, but knowing him he probably wouldn’t have it any other way. RIP Mr. Hockey, too bad we never got to see you play at the Aud. in a Kitchener Rangers uniform …maybe in heaven we will, maybe in heaven.
