My wife and my mother get along fine, though they’re not very close. My mother is a talker, and she tends to talk on and on about what seems like nothing at times and has no idea that we’ve tuned her out. In a few weeks, we are all carpooling to a wedding in Kingston. My wife has told me she plans to wear headphones for the entire drive because my mom would drive her nuts. While I sympathize with my wife, I think what she’s planning is incredibly rude and she just needs to suck it up. She’s given me an ultimatum: If I say no to the headphones, she won’t come to the wedding. What do I do? R in Cambridge
