Meryl Streep accepted the Cecil B. Demille Award and gave a speech that brought the audience to their feet. She talked about Hollywood being made up of many different backgrounds, and then turned the focus on Donald Trump.
Without mentioning his name specifically, Streep described the moment Donald Trump mocked a disabled reporter and she mentioned how people of power who do this sort of thing only encourage the behaviour.
“Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
She also paid a quick homage to her close friend Carrie Fisher (who was memorialized along with her Mother, Debbie Reynolds during the show) with a quote, “Take your broken heart, make it into art”.
PS- Viola Davis paid amazing tribute to Meryl before she came up to accept her award. I think this is equally worth a watch.
