Tegan and Sara surprised fans this week with a brand new short film that celebrates female friendship.
Filmed with their single “U-Turn” off 2016’s Love You To Death playing throughout, the five-minute film follows five teen girls as they practice for a dance competition approaching in the near future. Calling themselves The Ultimate Star Girls, friction arises when one of the girls becomes frustrated with her friends. She storms off, later regretting her actions and delivering an off-beat interpretive dance in order to apologize to her crew.
The story gets a happy ending, with the final credits revealing that the Ultimate Star Girls went on to defeat the Viper Boyz in the dance competition and remain best friends.
Filmed in Toronto, the short was directed by Emma Higgins, who has previously worked with Mother Mother, Dear Rouge, Dirty Radio and Dan Talevski. Higgins says that the track inspired her to create a visual about female friendships. “I was inspired by the message behind “u-turn” but wanted to put a bit of a spin on it by focusing on the relationships between friends—specifically those between young women,” writes Higgins on her Instagram page. “We were lucky to find a cast of passionate, talented and unique women to come together for this project both in front and behind the camera. Apart from the all female cast we also had an almost entirely female crew which was an amazing experience.”
