My boyfriend and I have lived together for two years. I moved into the house he owns and it is now our home. We’re both well off with good jobs and I do see a future with him, but there is one thing that’s driving me nuts. He refuses to spend money – or let me spend money – to improve our home.
He thinks new furniture, painting, redecorating and renovations to the kitchen and bathrooms are a waste of money. I thought after I moved in I could convince him, but he would rather spend money on vacations. I love to travel too, but I also want a home I can love to be in which is not the case right now.
He’s heading to California for two weeks on a work trip in a few days and I’m thinking of doing some redecorating while he’s gone without telling him. Just some small stuff. I want to get a new couch and furniture for the living room and repaint. Should I just do it, or is that a really bad idea? -M in Cambridge
