Dear Beat Breakfast Panel,
I’m a first time mom of the most amazing little boy. He is nearing 11 months now and for the past 4 months I’ve been battling with postpartum depression. For some reason I feel like my worth as a mother is defined by my ability to breastfeed. I struggled in the beginning, and now I’m going on 11 months of successful breastfeeding. However, I’m going back to work soon.
I’m wondering if other listeners can help me by letting me know how they overcame the feelings of failure when they stopped breastfeeding their children.
I know it seems like no big deal to a lot of people, but with postpartum depression too… it seems like the worst thing in the world to stop breastfeeding, and I feel like a failure even after successfully lasting 11 months and hopefully continuing until I go back to work.
Thanks for any words of encouragement you can offer.
